321. How to Make Time for What Matters
Join the Deciding Hour Priority Waitlist HERE:
You don't find time for the things that matter. You create it.
Life is full. There will always be responsibilities, obligations, errands, people who need you, and things competing for your attention. But if there's something you keep saying is important—a habit, a passion project, taking care of yourself, or work that's on your heart—you have to create space for it intentionally.
In this episode, Megan walks you through five steps for creating that space: name exactly what you want to make time for, decide that it matters, find a realistic and sustainable time window, protect that time, and pre-decide what you're going to do when you get there. She also shares one of her favorite identity-based habit “backdoors”: when you can't make yourself want to do the thing, focus on becoming the kind of person who does it.
In this episode, you'll learn:
-
Why you need to get specific about what you actually want to make time for
-
How naming the thing creates clarity around the time you need
-
Why you have to close the gap between what you say is important and what your calendar demonstrates is important
-
The difference between wanting something and wanting to want something
-
How to use identity to create a powerful “backdoor” into a habit
-
How to find a realistic, consistent, and sustainable time window
-
Why putting something first thing in the morning can give you a powerful advantage
-
Why you shouldn't build your plan around an idealized version of yourself
-
How to protect the time you've created
-
Why protecting a morning habit often begins with the choices you make the night before
-
How pre-deciding removes friction and makes following through easier
-
Why knowing exactly what you're going to do makes it easier to use your time well
-
How the Deciding Hour can become a protected space for the things that matter most
In short: Megan gives you a five-step process for creating real time and space for the things you say are important. Stop waiting for time to magically appear and intentionally create the conditions that make following through possible.
